Ebensburg - Joseph A. Shoemaker, 74, retired rase-horse owner and manager, hotel proprietor, and contractor died at 4:20 o''clock yesterday after noon, at his home, 413 West Horner St. He had been ill since July 4th and was recovering when he suffered a relapse friday.
The local man was widely known in racing circles in the eastern United States, having owned and trained many horses during his 25 years of turf experience. He later became engaged in the hotel and contracting business. He operated a liquor store in Barnesboro, PA and hotel at Vintondale, PA.
Mr. Shoemaker was born here on Aug 17 1870 as son of Joseph A. and Mary V. (McDonald) Shoemaker. His death ended a marraige union of more than 50 years. He and the former Margaret Agnes McCabe were married at Ebensburg May 21st 1895.
Besides his widow he leaves three children - Francis J., Ebensburg; Mrs. Harry Lloyd, Pittsburg; and Robert W. Johnstown. 1 daughter Margaret Agnes deceased. Also surviving are six grandchildren and these brothers and sisters. E.P. Shoemaker Ardmore Okla; Dr. W.R. and Dr. Dona D. Shoemaker; Mrs John E. Evans and Miss Theckla Shoemaker, All of Pittsburgh; Mrs. Harry Lloyd and Alfred M. Shoemaker of Ebensburg.
Funeral services will be conducted wednesday morning at Holy Name Catholic Church, of which the deceased was a member. Interment will be in the New Holy Name Cemetery under direction of the Rosensteel Funeral Home.
